You’ll suffer over 40,000 bouts of tech stress in your lifetime

The intent behind our cell phones, computers and devices is relatively straightforward: to make our days easier and more efficient.

Unfortunately, those very same devices are causing us a significant amount of “tech stress,” which has a negative impact on both our mental and physical well-being.

That’s according to a new study published by 24-Hour Fitness, a California-based chain of fitness clubs in the United States. The study, which polled 2,000 Americans, found the average American adult experiences two forms of technological malfunctions per day.

Those malfunctions result in a staggering 40,880 incidents of tech stress over the course of a typical adult lifespan.

Often, those stressful experiences manifest themselves in bouts of “tech rage” – 65 per cent of study respondents said they regularly “lose their cool” due to unreliable technology, while 50 per cent said they’ve yelled at a piece of technology and 16 per cent have been “reduced to tears.”

Most glaringly, one in seven respondents have actually thrown their phones across a room because it wasn’t working properly.

Respondents also noted negative health issues from technology breakdowns, including stiff necks, achy joints and migraines.

In addition to faulty phones, the causes of tech stress are varied and widespread: slow devices and downloads, crashing computers, missing files, annoying popup ads and forgotten passwords are all contributing factors.

Tech stress isn’t only confined to one’s personal life, however. It’s a common problem in the workplace as well. The study revealed that one seven people have missed a deadline because of a tech problem, while 25 per cent said they missed an important phone call that had “big repercussions.”

So how can we fight back against tech rage?

If you’re not on a deadline, it might be best to take a short break from technology altogether. Go for a walk around the block, distract yourself with a puzzle or hit the gym for a workout. Exercise is always a good bet.

We don’t all have the luxury of taking a screen break, however, so if you need to solve the problem right away, ask a friend or coworker. If you’re too embarrassed, ask Google! For software issues, try searching the help section.
